brief info
Work and Box Company
The Work and Box Company is a profession and work related measure for delinquent and violent young men, aged 16 to 21. The goal is to allow them to channel their aggressions and turn them into productive, self-sufficient energies, to socially integrate the young men and assist them in finding their first jobs.
Target group
- violent young men, aged 16 to 21
- with encounters with the police, and/or a criminal record
- hardly socially integrated
- never completed school
- often with migration background
- repeatedly failed to complete other measures
- in stress with family problems, debts, housing issues, etc.
Four Stages
- self-confrontation and orientation towards the internal
- working on oneself and orientation towards the external
- choosing a profession, establishing contact, first internships, placements
- bi-annual counselling
Comprehensive, eclectic and individualised approach
An individual plan with the respective requirements is created for each
youth, which reflects his special situation. The emphasis lies in each
participant’s own responsibility for taking his life into his own
hands.Therefore we use:
- proximity to economy: The project is connected with a company where the youth is trained in order for them to gain work experience. confrontation with daily routine of handicraft businesses
- social therapy: using systematic family therapy to establish contact and understand the young persons’ situation and help them develop new perspectives of behaviour
- pro-active integration of experiences: especially through working and boxing
- boxing: The approach is therapeutic: When they box, the participants come in contact with themselves and others. The individual topics and issues are not only reflected, but they can be worked through individually. Boxing creates crisis situations and confrontations. Tried and true patterns of behaviour are put in question and altered in the boxing situation. The participant gets to know himself better and learns how to use new strategies for solving problems. Inner attitudes become visible through boxing, and on the other side, a change in technique can also effect changes in attitude.
- synergy: experiences are communicated and shared with each other, everyone involved focuses the same clear objective.
Success
The project is very successful: the crimes committed by the participants have been reduced over the course of the project by 60-70%. The project has the capacity for an average of 14 participants; about 80% of the youth complete the project. The success story so far lies at 80% of the participants landing jobs (measured for the participants who completed the programme).
Funding
The project is financed by the European Structural Funds (ESF), the youth welfare office of Munich and of the district of Munich and assistance of the municipal of Taufkirchen. Additionally we have capital resources of our own, as well as donations and revenues of remittance works.

hand in gGmbH
hand in gGmbH is a charitable organization. Its name – the abbreviation for action oriented integration through experiences - reflects the content of the program: Its purpose is to create a result oriented, complete approach to overcome undesirable developments and multi-problem-settings in our society, to create and implement ways to solve these developments, which are hard to solve with words and theories. One focus is to help men with a willingness to use violence, another focus is direct work with culprits.
The action oriented integration through experiences is a chance of gaining experiences by conscious acting, and we help to integrate this conscious acting into the everyday life and thus gain new ways of behavior. The innovative concept of hand in has been rewarded several times.
hand in operates and supports profession and work related welfare services, child and youth care and education, advance training and further education in the field of social work and social expertise.
hand in is responsible for the Work and Box Company and other youth welfare services. We further offer consulting services, clearing and mediation as well as workshops in the field of personality development and soft skills for youths, pedagogues and executives.

The non-profit organisation hand in was mutually founded by Rupert Voß and Werner Makella in 2002. Deviated from experiences in educating young people, accompanying people in difficult personal circumstances, and in achieving economic and qualitative goals, they developed a methodology for (re-)integrating youths known to be violent. This was successfully implemented in the youth centre Work and Box Company. In 2008 the hand in gAG was founded in order to serve as a holding company for the nationwide rollout of the Work and Box Company project. Henceforward, the legal successor of hand in e.V., the hand in gGmbH, formed the responsible body for the area of Munich.
